There are some people you meet, who at first glance you wouldn’t suspect have the background and experience they do.

‘Sam’ is one of those people.  Her petite stature and youthful disposition belie a wealth of experience and dedication to causes that frighten many of us.

Sam is actually Dr. Samantha Nutt – a medical doctor & professor with more than a decade of experience as a specialist in Maternal and Child Health in zones of armed conflict.  She’s also the founder of War Child; one of Canada’s top charitable organizations focused on humanitarian activities worldwide. Sam’s focus on helping war-affected children and women has taken her to some of world’s most violent flash points in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Congo, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Iraq among others.

A speaker who provides a clearer understanding of how our everyday actions impact the world and the people around us, Sam shared with us her insights on Creating a Ground Swell: How to Foster Transformative Change last night and featured these 5 key messages to help when you’re trying to affect change and feel the frustrations:

1 – Know that the grander your vision, the longer the time line to achieve it.  To see your vision through, manage your expectations over the short term and take your achievements as they come.

2 – Know – What is your Why?  What is your motivation that gets you up and moving every day?  Let it fuel your commitment.

3 – Understand that ‘marginal risk = marginal change’.  Substantive risk = substantive change.’  Ask how you can stand apart from the pack.  How to attract new supporters? War Child recently continued their controversial viral marketing campaign that was a substantive risk…and it worked, resulting in more funding, worldwide awards and more talk about the work of War Child.  If you haven’t seen the videos for Camp Okutta by her organization, check them out.

4 – If no one is listening, change the message or the messenger.  Don’t let your ego get in the way.  Relinquish your commitment to process in favour of commitment to outcome to achieve your goals.

5 – Stay strong.

If it’s hard, it’s because what you are doing is important.
